Giambattista Bodoni



Giambattista Bodoni was born in Saluzzo, Piedmont, Italy.  He lived between February 16th 1740 and died November 29th 1813.  He is known as a publisher, typographer and Italian printer.  He started by engraving in wood.  He acquainted himself in Oriental language to render himself essential to the Propaganda press.  Bodoni also helped restore several Oriental alphabets.  As a typographer he made editions to the Greek, Latin and French classics are all highly prized for their typographical elegance.  After his death an amazing work appeared in two volumes quarto, entitled Manuale Tipografico.  In the beginning his typefaces were all decorative in french style of Fournier le jeune but by 1781 he was influenced by more modern typefaces and his manuscripts became devoid of decoration and he created his own type faces.  in 1790 the Bodoni typefaces was created.
